Surname Change Due to Marriage
Due to heavy seasonal demand, we will require more time to process each request. Please note the following estimated processing times:

After updating his or her marital
status, one has several options regarding his or her surname:
- Take his or her spouse's surname
- Maintain his or her maiden name
- Combine surnames (ex. Cohen-Levi)
- Choose a new surname for both spouses
In order to perform any of the changes above one must come
to the Consulate in person with:
- His or her passport
- Marital

Note: Updating a surname is a request that is processed
immediately only if you have appropriately updated your marital
status with the Consulate or the Ministry of Interior in Israel.

Change of Name (First or Surname)
A person 18-years-old or older may change his or her first and/or
last name granted that the person provides a valid reason for
changing his/her name.
A person who would like to change his/her last name a second time
may do so only 7 years from the date of the initial change.
Please proceed as follows:
- Arrive at the Consulate in person and provide:
- Include dependents (children under 18 years old) if desired.
Note: Approval of both parents in person is required
to complete such a request.
- After receiving approval from the Ministry of Interior
– a process that may take up to 6 months – an
official certificate of change of name will be issued and
provided to the person(s) making the request.
- You will be asked to arrive at the Consulate a second time
with your Israeli passport and the passports of your dependents
(if any) in order to amend the passports with the change of
name.
Process by Mail
You may request a change of name via mail;
However, this entails signing all documents in front of a notary
public.
