Terrorism and Prevention in Israel
Top terrorists captured
by IDF. Two senior
terrorist commanders were captured in IDF raids early Saturday morning.
Both terrorists were found inside hospitals; one had been wounded
after a bomb he was building exploded, and the other was hiding
in a hospital basement with a gun. Both had been involved
in terrorist attacks against Israelis. More
Palestinian terrorists
could carry out chemical attacks. Israeli security officials
have said that Palestinian terror organizations have the ability
to carry out chemical attacks in Israel. Since the late 1990's,
traces of pesticides, rat poisoning and other toxic chemicals have
been found after at least five bombings. In some cases, nails
and bolts packed into explosives had been dipped in rat poison.

EU
Parliament Members Visit Israel
On Monday, Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon addressed a group of 200 European Parliamentarians
visiting Jerusalem. They are on a four-day Mideast mission
entitled "A Moment for Peace." In his address, Prime Minister
Sharon said that Israel would agree to recognize a Palestinian state
and, at the third stage of the Roadmap, would discuss settlements,
borders and security zones. In reference to the security fence,
he said that the need for the fence would disappear as soon as terror
disappeared. He spoke of wanting to implement good will measures
towards the Palestinians, but that easing restrictions could lead
to more terror attacks. Meanwhile, Israel has in fact lifted
some restrictions in the West Bank and Gaza. More
Ahmed
Qurei to Continue as Head of PA Government
In anticipation of the end
of his one-month term as head of the Palestinian Authority's emergency
cabinet, PA Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei said he would continue to
serve as the head of the Palestinian government. Still under
discussion, however, is the issue of control over Palestinian security
forces. One man being considered for the Interior Ministry
portfolio is Abdel Razak al Yahiya, but any security decisions would
not be implemented without the cooperation of Yasser Arafat and
the national security council. Yahiya served as Interior Minister
in 2002 for a short time, but he faced opposition from Arafat.

Israel
and US to Fund Rocket-Intercepting Laser
Israel and the United States
will spend at least $57 million on the development of a laser cannon
capable of shooting down short-range missiles. Israel plans
to use the "Nautilus" laser weapon to protect its northern border
from the Katyusha rockets fired by Hizbullah. The terrorist
group currently has about 11,000 rockets aimed at Israel.
In 1996 the laser beam system was successfully tested in New Mexico,
and it now needs funding to become a practical weapon. It
has significant potential to aid the war on terror. More
